Our Vision

Our key pledges as the SDP:

• Actively campaign for a fair, controlled and harmonious Brexit process in the best interests of the British people and with due consideration to our EU friends and neighbours
• Parliament should govern according to the will of the people, while respecting the requirements of business and industry
• Guarantee the rights of all contributing EU nationals living in the UK, and demand other EU nations reciprocate
• Access to childcare from 8am to 6pm for parents of all children to the age of 16
• Free School breakfasts and lunches for all children of school age
• Overhaul foreign aid with a focus on direct humanitarian aid and ‘trade not aid’
• Create overseas universities and medical colleges which fulfil UK criteria and contribute towards credits in a points based immigration system.
• No tax on the minimum wage
• Create an Overseas Development Unit for the UK Military to specialise in construction and healthcare in developing countries
• Free university education throughout the UK for key subjects
• Protect the rights of pensioners
• Actively encourage better job prospects for the disabled
• Have a fair, ethical, controlled immigration and emigration system that ties in with the UK infrastructure and economic climate

Economy

• Eliminate the deficit and run an overall surplus by the end of the parliament by balancing the excessive welfare bill and encouraging enterprise
• Raise £10bn/annum by tackling EU-enabled tax avoidance programmes
• Remove barriers to work by offering free childcare solutions to all parents
• Expand apprenticeships and establish national colleges for vocational skills

Immigration

• Create a border force to clamp down on illegal immigration and identify victims of trafficking
• Fund further customs officers to clamp down excise-related crime
• Require new benefits claimants with poor English language skills to attend free English classes
• Points-based immigration system based on skills, language and character rather than the origin of the individual

Healthcare

• Investment in preventative healthcare. GPs to provide regular check-ups for early diagnosis of critical illnesses 
• Set up a Public Health Enquiry into the effects of long term mobile phone use and the links to serious health issues
• 7 day access to GPs to reduce the burden on frontline emergency services
• Ensure that dental and dental therapist appointments are available to workers presently ill-served by conventional opening hours
• Ensure that non-UK citizens have adequate health insurance at the point of entry
• Integrate NHS health and social care
• Recruit and train extra doctors and medical staff to adequately care for an expanding and ageing population
• Ensure that medical staff from abroad have UK-equivalent qualification in addition to adequate language skills
• End the postcode lottery for cancer treatment
• Enable 24 video conferencing appointments for direct access to GPs and specialists with special attention to those citizens living in remote rural locations

• Radical overhaul of child benefit to ensure it is child benefit and not parent benefit
• Actively help those trapped in the benefits dependency cycle by providing childcare and vocational training
• Stop paying child benefit for children who live abroad
• End the winter fuel allowance for pensioners living in Mediterranean countries

Law and Order

• Scrap Police and Crime Commissioners
• Ensure that policing is free of party politics
• Encourage former military personnel to retrain for frontline policing roles
• Create refuse recycling facilities in all prisons to act as a deterrent, making the prisons’ energy usage self-sufficient, and to recycle more household waste that is currently going to landfill

• Ensure that individuals’ student loans are taken back by PAYE
• Create British Overseas Universities to export and develop our excellent education system
• Create a sensibly costed framework for working towards capping class sizes at 25 for primary schools

• Protect the greenbelt and encourage housing development on brownfield sites
• Bring 350,000 empty homes back into use
• Radical overhaul of the British council housing estates which show high levels of economic and social deprivation. Restore not rebuild.

• Redefine foreign aid to include direct aid
• Create an overseas development unit for the military to specialise in construction and healthcare in developing countries
• Ban arms exports to countries flagged up by the FCO’s human rights report
• Help homeless veterans by creating a department to look after the wellbeing of former service personnel
• Meet the NATO target of spending 2% including spending on a Trident programme

• Repeal the 1972 European Communities Act
• Ensure that UK fishing waters are non-negotiable in any EU settlement/agreement

• Negotiate a new free trade agreement with the EU

• Support mixed energy usage and increase renewable energy
• Fully investigate and independently ascertain the viability of fracking
• Ensure that nuclear power plants are UK owned
• Divert waste from landfill to prisons to ensure cost-effective recycling and energy production
• Ensure the greenbelt is protected and restore neglected heritage canals
• Invest in High Speed Rail and review the HS2 project to reduce the excessive cost and impact to the countryside

Taxation

• No tax on minimum wage
• Reduce corporation tax to encourage businesses to pay their taxes here and not abroad
• Introduce a turnover tax for international and multinational businesses that trade and make profit here
• Scrap inheritance tax
• Ban the tax on the sick by abolishing hospital car parking charges
• Recoup lost taxes by clamping down on MTIC fraud

Constitution

• Campaign for Direct Democracy and Proportional Representation in the UK Parliament
• Reform the House of Lords. Lords to be appointed on merit not ancestry. Reduce the number of unelected Lords on a gradual basis
• Create Regional Assemblies of roughly 5 million inhabitants and devolve power to these assemblies in the same way as it is for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
• Annual referendums to coincide with May elections to cover such things as the Death Penalty, Hunting, Euthanasia, Environmental Reform. Information to be sent by the independent Electoral Commission on a low cost, high tech basis.

  • Actively engage with the Trade Unions to reform the strike laws
  • Require foreign vehicles to purchase a British disk before entering the UK
  • Ensure foreign vehicles are correctly insured at point of entry
  • Ensure that all train operators provide high quality free WIFI on routes that exceed a 30 minute journey to encourage business commuters to take public transport

• Encourage local referendums on an annual basis to coincide with May council elections
